WeChat for Android

For many smartphone users, the "phone" part matters less than the "smart" part; it's more important to be able to text message friends than make phone calls. The good news is, your Android device almost certainly came with a chat app. The better news is, you don't have to use it; you can download and use your favorite chat app, or try them all until you find one that's best for you. We tried WeChat on a new Android smartphone. Like similar apps, WeChat's mobile app enables text and voice messaging, and it can find your friends, too. WeChat also lets you share personal photo albums among users. New features include high-resolution video chat. WeChat's interface opened with a cool shot of the Earth. The log-in page let us sign up for a new WeChat account, but (better still) we could log in via our Facebook account. The setup process involves allowing WeChat to post items (such as photos) on your behalf, enabling Address Book Matching, and entering your phone number for verification. The default country code is China, so don't forget to change it to your own country's calling code from the drop-down list! A message declaring WeChat "the complete mobile communicator" verified our setup. WeChat's app makes excellent use of Android's functionality. A few swipes took us through an overview of the app's Send Voice Messages, Share Photos, and other features, including Look Around and Shake, a tool for finding and notifying friends. The Chat tool itself is simple in layout and controls, just like it should be. We tapped a large green button to set a Profile Photo using our camera or an existing photo. The app's toolbar let us manage our Chats, Contacts, Social tools, and Settings. Setting up a new chat app used to be a pain, but WeChat not only imported our active chats but made personalizing our data a cinch. A chat app that doesn't work well won't cut it these days, and WeChat holds its own against other popular apps, both in voice and text messaging. WeChat is definitely worth a look. 

Talking Tom Cat 2 Free for Android

 With a few changes and some additional functions, Talking Tom Cat 2, an interactive voice-recognition app, brings more cuteness to your Android device. The opening screen of Talking Tom Cat 2 has many of the same elements as the original, but now Tom is set up in his own apartment with a new nemesis, Ben. The graphics are just as good in the second version and the onscreen movements are very fluid. The talk function is there again and Tom can repeat anything you say in his distinctive voice. He'll also reflexively react when you poke or swipe certain parts of his body. If you try pulling his tail for example, he'll react defensively. For even more fun, you can dress up Tom in clothes, costumes, and accessories. At times, the humor is a bit juvenile, but there's nothing really offensive here and Talking Tom 2's only goal seems to make his owner laugh. The app can be installed on lower-tier smartphones that have limited graphics, although a few hiccups might occur, but it works best on devices with full graphics capabilities. There's more to do here than in the first Talking Tom Cat and, although it might not have seemed possible, they've upped the cute factor even more. We highly recommend this app to anyone who needs a quick laugh or fun diversion during down time. 

Fingerprint Lock Screen for android

 Unlocking your phone FBI-style with a fingerprint seems like a neat idea, but it's harder than it looks. Fingerprint Lock Screen tries to play on that idea to prank your friends, but it doesn't even work very well at that. If you can even get past the ads to try to set the app up, it's buggy and can be easily worked around. The app claims it can fool your friends into thinking your phone recognizes your fingerprint. How it's supposed to work is that you scan the image of your fingerprint and add your name so your phone recognizes you. However, the setup process is so loaded with pop-over ads that you can't even scroll through the menu. Anytime you exit out of one, another pops up within seconds. If you can make it to the launch application button, Fingerprint Lock Screen brings up a neat screen that looks very futuristic. However, tapping any of your phone's physical buttons will take someone trying to get into your phone to the home or app screen. Fingerprint Lock Screen may seem like a neat idea, but it falls flat on its face. It's almost impossible to set up correctly and when you do, it doesn't work. This app isn't worth your time and effort when there are dozens of other apps that will prank your friends without incredibly obnoxious ads.

KakaoTalk for iPhone

KakaoTalk Messenger is more than a basic chat tool; it combines a number of features and tools to create a communication environment very much like a social network, but with a much greater emphasis on one-on-one and personal conversations. The app is designed for easy access to your contacts, combined with a number of additional tools to enhance your use of the service. One of the most important things about KakaoTalk is the ability to connect with other users, so before you can use it, you must connect your phone number to an account. This requires a couple of verification steps, but when done, the app can access your contact list and check to see who you know that uses the app. You can then friend them and start chatting. Of course, there is far more to it than that. Chatting can be done in groups, in chat rooms, directly with people on your friend list, or via video or voice chat. You can also find people by ID search, QR code (scanning their phones), or shaking the phone near someone else with an account. Search tools exist, as well, but the dual verification system maintains privacy within the system. Other fun additions like items, themes, and a Plus-Friends list for celebrities and popular users are all welcome features. It's no wonder that KakaoTalk is becoming increasingly popular with teenagers and younger adults who are jaded by the privacy issues that major social networks like Facebook tend to have. It is quick, mobile, and flexible enough to adjust to how you use the tool. For those that enjoy its use, there are many ways to do so.  

Tango Text, Voice & Video for iPhone

Tango Video Calls is a free VoIP application for iOS with high goals, but low performance. The app is very easy to use, but its interface misses the finesse of a native iOS application such as FaceTime. With its intuitive interface, most users will be able to skip the video tutorial and get started right away, especially those who've used a VoIP app before. Tango Video Calls does offer some great features, such as the FaceTime-ish video call (the primary aim of the app) or (what we liked the most) video messaging. We loved the concept of breaking down the wall between mobile operating systems, and we do value the initiative from Tango's developers. It was so good to have a video chat with our friends running Android, which isn't an option with FaceTime. Another feature we loved is the capability to receive Tango calls without the need to continuously keep the app running in the background. This prevents Tango from being a data and (most importantly!) battery hog. We did have some issues with the video quality of the calls, but these didn't detract from the app's overall usefulness. We also liked the app's capability to switch between cameras, similar to Skype or FaceTime, but the images weren't as crisp as during a FaceTime call. What is good, though, is that Tango is not limited to Wi-Fi connections; it can also use your 3G connection, which makes it very handy. Despite a few video and image issues, we highly recommend this app for its ease of use and its capability to cross platforms.  

Viber for iPhone - Free Phone Calls & Text for iOS

Viber gives Skpe a run for its money, and we think it comes out ahead. It ships with a good-looking interface dominated by the color purple that will have you placing VoIP calls in no time. The app integrates with iOS perfectly and, fortunately, doesn't require a username and password to register. Instead, it uses your phone number as your ID. Once you have allowed the app to scan your address book, the contacts registered in the Viber network will appear, and you can start calling them, even if they're based internationally. We were pleasantly surprised by the audio quality of calls: it was crystal clear every time we used Viber to contact our friends. One of the things we liked best using the app was that Viber is also available for Android, which means you'll see your friends running Android in your contacts list, so you can say goodbye to this type of limitation. Also, another great feature we appreciated is Viber's ability to allow incoming calls without already having the app open. As soon as you slide to Answer, Viber launches and you only have to wait a couple seconds before you can start speaking. Overall, we liked how this free app performed during our test. We had no dropped calls or any audio issues, which earns Viber a well-deserved place among our favorite apps.

WhatsApp Messenger for iPhone

WhatsApp Messenger is an iOS (and other platform) messaging app that allows notifications to be pushed instantly. It doesn't require usernames or logins, using just your phone number as your unique ID. And, unlike some messenger apps, WhatsApp Messenger is always on. The download is fast and the install is easy. WhatsApp Messenger has an pretty standard interface with a list of clients and a chat window for each ongoing chat session. A neat feature is setting up group chats and being able to share video and music with others at the same time. Since WhatsApp Messenger uses your phone number and can read your device's contacts, there's no need to add anyone. If they are in your phone book, you can use WhatsApp Messenger with them. Since it doesn't use SMS, there's no expensive text charges to international friends, either. We've used WhatsApp Messenger for a few months now and it has quickly become a standard messenger app. The ease of setup, the lack of logins, and having no need for server accounts make it as simple to set up as possible. Especially if you're communicating internationally, you can save a considerable amount of money on text and video chats. WhatsApp Messenger is a great app.  

WeChat for iPhone

WeChat is a social app that gathers all of your sharing and communication tools in one place, including video calls, text messages, and images. To fully experience the app, you'll need to get your friends to use it too, but it's a great way to connect with your friends across all platforms. To get started with WeChat, you'll need to create a user ID and password, which requires you to enter your phone number and a four-digit code that is sent to you via text message. The app will need access to your Address Book, which is par for the course with this type of chat/text app. The interface has a very simple design and no ads to accidentally tap, which we greatly appreciated. Four navigation buttons line the bottom of the screen: Chats, Contacts, Social, and Settings. The Chats screen lists your most recent chats, so you can continue a previous conversation or start a new one by tapping Magic Wand in the right corner. We got a friend to download the app and were able to text back and forth without any trouble. We loved the Web WeChat feature for moving from an iPhone to a PC, which was simply a matter of visiting the site on our PC and scanning the QR code using the app's scanner. In a matter of seconds, we were ready to chat with our other WeChat friends on our PC. If you're brave, the Social feature lets you look around for other WeChat users to chat with, or browse your own contacts. There is a very ample Settings menu for updating your WeChat profile, adjusting privacy settings, and browsing a helpful FAQ. With the explosion of smartphones has come an explosion of social apps. WeChat stands out as a viable contender and we recommend it to all users.  

Mobile Tracker FREE for iPhone- Locate any mobile phone in the world

If you want your friends to think you're the type of person who would download an app to locate them, Mobile Tracker Free is built just for you. This free app gives a realistic presentation of tracking a phone number you enter, but it's just an illusion. Mobile Tracker has a simple interface and you just need to enter a phone number in the search field to watch the drama unfold. As soon as you tap Locate, the app appears to search through provider databases and encrypted call histories, and then calculates the radio cell. In other words, it copies the moves of a real mobile spy app. Now the trick is that it doesn't do any of those things -- it simply displays your location -- so your friend (and his or her phone) will need to be standing close by for the joke to work. Overall, we liked how the app interacts with the built-in iOS map application and Google Maps, creating the illusion of a real mobile tracker application. We're still not sure how funny others might find the joke, but if you want your friends to think you possess the ability to find them through their phones, Mobile Tracker is the right app for you.

Avast Free Antivirus 2014

Pros

  Design: Avast's new layout is a unique and clean take on managing security. Rather than copying a flat Metro look like so many others, Avast organizes its environment and prioritizes it in a sensible manner. Flat icons and subtle menu animations look great, secondary pop-out menus don't feel cluttered, and the toggle icon also helps create a cleaner experience. Security: An improved firewall, noninvasive scanning, and a complementary, crowdsourced, whitelisting approach via Community IQ keeps this security suite on alert for untrustworthy sites and phishing scams. A noninvasive browser add-on protects your Web usage with built-in do not track integration and selective blockers for analytical and social trackers. Utility: Avast represents itself as more of a security manager than just a conventional scanner. This version includes a command center-like dashboard for tracking security statistics, pop-up notifiers for system status and security news, a multidevice manager, and a streamlined upgrade pipeline via in-app store.

Cons:

  Small disclosure: Installing certain components like browser plug-ins, useful though they may be, can also be viewed as an unwanted surprise. The installer gives you options to install various components but throws a lot of information and component offers to users at once without much to go by. Varied performance: According to a previous protection report from August, Avast scored higher than the average scanner but still behind many of the top performers. The added browser plug-in, though great when it works, sometimes became sluggish when we tested out some sites with heavier analytic trackers. Information overload: Global and personal stats are great to see, but are they really useful for the average user? Even an advanced technician can really get only so much value out of numbers without any real numerical or unit-based indication of what they represent. Perhaps a market researcher may get more use out of this.

Final Verdict:

  This year's Avast release has distinguished itself as not just a malware or antivirus solution, but also as a full-on security monitor for your machine. It comes with great design, displaying a lot of information yet maintaining a high usability factor for the core feature of virus removal and malware scanning. Avast has created value beyond the security scanner, and this version is a huge leap over last year's Avast 8. We expect its protection scores to continue to increase as protection scores from third-party vendors get released.

Avast Free Antivirus for Mac is Avast's answer to concerns about how to browse safely. The application is packaged with a brand-new, easy-to-understand graphical user interface, with access to all features available at single click. The application's onscreen tools are well-organized, and its live graphics enhance the feeling of safety -- you can see that the antivirus software doesn't sleep and is always working to protect you from any viruses circulating on the Web. Avast's free software provides three shields to protect your computer: a file system shield, an e-mail shield, and a Web shield. With all three representing a door to your computer, Avast does a great job of watching these entrances. However, this comes at a cost, and we don't mean money: as soon as you launch the app, you'll notice a slight drop in your computer's performance, which is due to Avast being at work scanning your entire computer for infected files. Secondly, it affects your browser's performance, as it also scans the pages you attempt to navigate to for viruses through the extensions it installs in Safari, Firefox, and Chrome browsers. We did find its notification feature handy, as it informs the user about its actions, so you'll always know what the software is up to. Overall, Avast Antivirus for Mac is a nice addition to your Mac toolbox. It's free and very easy to use. Atomix Productions' Virtual DJ Free not only mixes and mashes beats from a classic two-deck console, but also it serves as audio central for your system since it also records audio and video, burns discs, and even broadcasts online using a radio server or your own PC as a client-limited server. A survivor, Virtual DJ has been making music for millions of users for more than a decade. The latest version adds new controllers and full compatibility with Windows 8 multitouch surfaces. And it's still free. Like similar tools, Virtual DJ takes its functional and style cues from the traditional pro DJ console, with the side-by-side, turntable-style scratch pads surrounded by duplicate control sets. You can change its skin from the Config. button on the top edge. The lower half of Virtual DJ's interface is tabbed for those features you need the most: Browser, Sampler, Effects, and Record; each with a submenu accessing main features. For instance, under Record, we could Record Audio, Burn CD, Broadcast, and Record Video. The Sampler has 12 tracks with large, easy-to-see sliders and Play and Rec buttons, while the Effects tab offers both Sound and Video Effects as well as Video Transitions. We started with the Browser, which is anchored by a specialized, music-oriented tree view in the left sidebar. We dragged some MP3s into the right and left decks. Virtual DJ showed each song's spectral energy in a small graph in each deck and in a larger graph along the top displaying sampled selections. Virtual DJ automatically integrated our selection into the main spectral view (which can be grabbed, dragged, and altered) and loaded it on the scratch pad. A cool touch: Virtual DJ illuminates and aligns sampled tracks on the pad's rim, just as if they'd been the grooves on vinyl records. The only beef we could muster over Virtual DJ is actually common to all such programs, and they inherited it from the real deal: The need to cram two full sets of as many highly-visible controls as will fit into an ergonomically useful space. uTorrent for Mac

You will be taken to a third-party site to complete your download. Much like the lightweight uTorrent for Windows (also weighing in at less than 5MB), this version of uTorrent excels at downloading files quickly with minimal resource overhead. Even more stripped down than the Windows version, uTorrent for Mac gives you a familiar, three-pane interface, with support for multiple downloads and probably more drill-down details than you even need--including graphs, tables, and other specifics on seed, peers, pieces, and more. You can also throttle upload and download rates, and stop seeding automatically at a certain ratio. uTorrent is probably not the best client for actually finding torrents (there's just a simple search bar that takes you to results pages in your browser), and users looking for browsing and viewing features should check out more full-featured BitTorrent clients. If you don't need a lot of extra features and you're looking for a fast BitTorrent client that requires almost no configuration, uTorrent is a solid option.
